Nearly worn out by the earlier stresses faced today, I went ahead with my chore of picking up the kids this late afternoon. I went to Icy’s school first. There he was by the exit, excitedly smiling at me. He sat beside me in front, took his headphones out and grabbed the ipad from my bag. He forgot my kiss. It’s ok, it happens once in a while. As I was about to start the car, he blurted while staring out the window, “Mommy, I think I’m in love.”
Suddenly, I felt blood rush at the back of my neck, sighed deeply and said a quick prayer for God to guide our conversation. My responses would be life altering for both of us. “Oh God! Please help.”
So, I ran the car and calmly asked him why he thinks its love. He replied, “Because I think about her all the time. I’m happy when we talk and she cares about what happens to me.” Then I answered, “Son, I know how you feel. I’ve been there so please listen well. At your age, all of us get confused about the difference between friendship and love. It’s normal.”
“Then, they break up for a number of reasons like they get disappointed, lose their feelings or just realize they committed a mistake and they can’t be friends anymore.”
He was quiet. I caught him looking at me as we drove to Issa’s school. The silence needed to be broken.
“Do you want her in your life for a long time?” I asked.
“Yes” he replied.
“Be her friend baby. Mommy only had 2 trusted girlfriends in highschool while with boys, your Titos Howard, Rod, Jeff and Riemen got to become family. Early on, your titos and I talked about not confusing our friendship for anything more and see, we are still best of friends for over 20 years now. Do you want to have her in your life for as long as me and my bestfriends are together?” He nodded.
“Then be her friend baby. Grow up together. You will meet a lot of people. God will give you choices and let you meet the right one. You cannot force or rush things because both of you still have a lot of learning to do. If its God’s Will that you end up with her later on, it will happen. God will make a way.”
We reached Issa’s school. I parked the car. Before he got out to get his sister, he smiled at me and said “Thanks mommy. That’s a good idea. She can be my bestfriend.”
I truly don’t know what will happen in the days to come but a part of me wishes that I was brave enough to talk to my parents the way he did. He’s a smart, sensible and compassionate young man. Somehow, I’m certain that he will avoid unnecessary heartaches and the Lord’s Word will be His guide.
I thank God for the guidance in this impromptu situation and for giving me my best buds whose experiences were entwined with mine while growing up. The Lord is indeed so good, He prepares us way ahead of time so we’re prepared when the situation hits us.
As it is written in Philippians 4:7, “Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds everything we understand. His peace will guide your hearts and minds as you live in Jesus Christ.”
